Jensen Plowright has wasted no time adding to his victory tally, winning the fifth stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake.
Alpecin-Deceuninck delivered Plowright perfectly, the Australian only forced to sprint from the wheel with 150metres remained, easily taking his second professional victory.
The Belgium team took control at the head of the peloton with a one-kilometre and were hardly challenged despite a late run from Bingoal-WB and Tarteletto-Isorex.
Plowright was joined by Bingoal-WB pair Davide Persico and Alex Salby on today’s podium, the Belgium team will be rueing a missed opportunity with four of their riders finishing in the top ten.
Today, the Australian stamped his authority as the fastest sprinter at the 23rd Tour of Qinghai Lake by winning the only two bunch sprints that have been on offer to the fast men.
Despite Plowright being first across the line the Australian was quick to acknowledge the work his teammates did.
“It was pretty chaotic on that last climb before the descent, plenty of attacks going so my teammates did a lot of work to keep the group together and to make sure it was a bunch sprint in the end,” Plowright said
“In the last kilometre the boys went full, it was just a perfect lead-out, it was unreal.”
Race leader Jefferson Cepeda maintained a 1:48 lead in the general classification, Caja Rural-Seguros enjoyed a day that was relatively uneventful as the 126km stage featured only two early categorised climbs that failed to provide a real opportunity to split the race apart.
Mario Aparicio (Burgos-BH) defended his polka dot jersey with a third place over the stage’s second climb adding to his lead, whilst Mulueberhan maintains the green jersey despite Plowright’s stage victory.
Tianyoude Hotel Cycling continue their great Tour of Qinghai Lake as Saeid Safarzadeh defended the blue jersey for best Asian rider.
Stage 6 of the Tour of Qinqhai Lake is 206km long beginning in Xihaizhen and finish in Qilian.
