Every year, the UCI Asia Tour brings together some of the most prestigious events on the continent. It is an important series that gives Asian teams the chance to measure up against invited professional teams.

The Tour of Qinghai Lake is the first of seven Chinese events on this Asian calendar, and the longest. On July 5th the peloton will set off for two weeks that will take them around the largest interior salt water lake in the People’s Republic of China.

From that date until July 18th, this beautiful region of the country will provide the stage for some exciting battles as athletes vie for stage victories, the overall win, and points towards the UCI Asia Tour ranking.

Cycling is a fast developing sport in Asia, and it is thanks in large part to quality events such as the Tour of Qinghai Lake. The high level of racing and the participation of foreign teams make this event a magnificent showcase for our sport; athletes discover a top quality sporting destination, and spectators get a chance to witness cycling at its best.

The Chinese Cycling Association and its President Jiadong Cai are only too aware of the importance of staging such events for the development of our sport, and my sincere thanks go to them and to the Asian Cycling Confederation under the Presidency of Mr Hee Wook Cho.

It was a real pleasure for me to welcome a delegation from the organisation of the Tour of Qinghai Lake to the UCI headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland, in May.  Once again, the organisers of this Chinese stage race have put in a huge amount of work to ensure the riders can compete in the best possible conditions. I congratulate them, as well as the host cities and their local authorities, the event’s sponsors and all the volunteers who also have an important part to play in the success of these two weeks of intense racing.

In closing, I send my best wishes to all athletes participating in the 14th edition of the Tour of Qinghai Lake.

Brian Cookson
