Longbaotan natural protection area is situated
in Jielong Township.The protection area is 25
kilometers from east to west and 4 kilometers
from south to north with the total area of 100
square kilometers. The area is surrounded by many
high mountains, most of which has an altitude
between 5000-5500 metres. The annual average temperature
is below zero centigrade, and in July temperature
is below ten centigrade. The annual sunshine time
is 2300 hours, and annual precipitation is 730
millimetres, which is concentrated from June to
September. The branch of Tongtian River passes
through the area forming a wet place on the plateau.
The local people regard black-neck crane and other
animals as lucky birds. The area has become an
ideal habitat for birds. From March to April every
year, many birds like black-neck cranes, spot-headed
geese, brown-headed gull and so on, come here
to lay eggs and breed young. Of the 15 kinds 0f
existing cranes in the world, the black-neck crane
is the most treasured kind in number. There are
only 900 in the world, and only about one hundred
in our country. The rare bird belongs to the protected
animal in grade A. Longbaotan has been approved
to be state-grade natural protection area by State
Council, to be the provincial bird by the people’s
government of Qinghai province.
